76ers Future In Question: What Changes Should They Make?

maximios June 10, 2023 Sport

A season that was met with high praise and championship aspirations had turned into a big disappointment for the Philadelphia 76ers. After getting swept in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs by the Boston Celtics, there is turmoil in the city of brotherly love. Of course, there has to some changes that could happen within the Sixers organization. Even though that sounds simple, there not one person or group to blame. Here are some change options that the 76ers can take to get back on the track of being successful.

Fire Brett Brown

One solution that almost everyone points to is to fire head coach Brett Brown. Despite Brown knowing his X’s and O’s, he has a lot of flaws to him. One of the biggest flaws is he can’t change strategies in mid-game. In the Boston series, this can be seen when Boston coach Brad Stevens made adjustments and he would milk out the same play and most of the time it would have the same result. Another reason is the fallout with Jimmy Butler leaving Philly. On J.J. Redick‘s podcast, Butler said that the reason he left Philly was that Brown was trying to control him. Lastly, Brown’s lack of motivational skills with the players. We see this with Joel Embiid in his conditioning issues and Ben Simmons‘ lack of shooting, which Brown said they wanted to work on.

Fire Elton Brand

A few could say to get rid of the General Manager for the 76ers Elton Brand. Even though his tenure has been short, he has made some big mistakes as well. The biggest one people could point out is the horrendous contracts he gave. This includes giving Tobias Harris a max contract for 5 years, $180 million, and giving Al Horford 4 years, $109 million. This follows into his mistake of the construction of the 76ers roster. When you look at the roster, they have size, which is good for defense. The downside of it is that there aren’t any shooters. If they had re-signed Redick, he would be able to fill that void. They tried experimenting with certain players but it hasn’t worked.

Break Up Simmons and Embiid

A lot of people will see this as a last resort, but there is also the possibility of breaking up the duo of Simmons and Embiid. These two have many positives going for them. With Simmons, you get an elite playmaker who is also an elite defender. With Embiid, you get a bruiser of a center who can bully and dominate in the paint. At the same time, he can also get 30 points and 15 rebounds in his sleep. But there’s an opinion out there that says that these two don’t mesh well. If they can get a new coach, they could mesh with flying colors. On the other hand, if they don’t, we should expect a lot of trade offers given for either of these two players.
