Dwyane Wade to Return to the NBA? Comeback Season in Effect?

maximios February 1, 2023 Sport

Former long-time Miami Heat superstar and future Hall-of-Famer Dwyane Wade has plans to help his friend and former teammate, LeBron James with workouts. Wade, who retired after last season, has tutored players like Ben Simmons and Josh Hart this summer. According to Yahoo! Sports, when asked about making a comeback, Wade said: “I’m done, but my trainer is going to keep me in shape just in case something happens”. Wade then added, “I’m going to stay in shape because you never know. Never say never”. The quotes immediately had fans wondering will Wade return. Most would consider the Los Angeles Lakers to be the team that signs him. Although he’s most likely to stay retired, it is fun to wonder what a comeback season would be like.

Effectiveness

Wade’s days of dominance are long gone, but he would be an effective player off of the bench. In his last year with the Heat, he averaged 15.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game and 4.2 assists per game. Wade also played about 26 minutes per game in 72 games total. He proved that when healthy, he still has more in the tank. His statistics overall were better than the previous season. If Wade decides to play next season, he will post similar stats to his 2018-19 campaign.

Should the Lakers Sign Dwayne Wade?

Wade is not only helping James with workouts, but he recently moved to Los Angeles. His son, Zaire Wade, is teammates with James’ son at a Los Angeles Prep School. Add that with him keeping the door slightly open for another season, all signs point to him signing with the Lakers. The Lakers would be the ideal spot for Wade. He will be on a contending team with his friend while staying in the area. However, the Lakers’ roster is full. The Lakers will have to cut one or two players to make room for Wade. The Lakers should stay focused on building up their current roster.

If Not the Lakers, then Who?

Miami Heat

Wade stated that he will travel to Miami from time-to-time to support the Heat. If he wants to return, the Heat will be more than happy to sign him. He will bring fanfare and marketing. But, Wade’s farewell tour last season closed the door on this possibility.

Los Angeles Clippers

Although this would be a controversial move, it makes sense for the Los Angeles Clippers. They are looking to fill their final roster spot(s). With Andre Iguodala still tied up with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Clippers could be forced to move on and look to Wade. Wade would still live in Los Angeles and play for a title contender. However, his loyalty to James will prevent him from considering this option.

Enjoy Retirement, D-Wade

Wade will ultimately choose to stay in retirement. He has nothing left to prove. He is enjoying life outside of basketball and looks happy. His workouts with James and other players is his way of giving back to the game. Wade is tugging at the heartstrings of fans. Also, there is not a space for him on a contending team. Rosters are full and training camp is underway. At 37 years old, Wade only has one more thing he needs from basketball, which is a spot in the Hall of Fame.
