Free Agent Profile: Montrezl Harrell – CrownHoops

maximios December 9, 2023 Sport

Montrezl Harrell is one of the free agents who will be courted by a few different teams this season. A quality hustle player who can rack up the rebounds night in and night out despite being relatively undersized for his position. He has improved massively during his tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers and has finally found his role after his first two years with the Houston Rockets. Now, the Sixth Man of the Year candidate is going to have some quality bidders for his services this offseason. Without further adieu, let’s take a look at which teams will most likely vie for Harrell.

This season, Harrell has had another impressive campaign. Not only has he taken another leap in his development, but he is also a Sixth Man of the Year candidate. An impressive feat considering the reigning two-time Sixth Man of the Year, Lou Williams, is on his squad. This season, Harrell has averaged a career-high 18.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. On top of this, he has also tallied a career-best defensive rating of 107. What goes unrecognized on the stat sheet though is the energy and hustle he brings night in and night out. A quality that any team in the league could use. Harrell is definitely a Kenneth Faried type of player and is starting to fine-tune his game.

Candidate #1: Los Angeles Clippers

This one is obvious. The Clippers would be smart to try to re-sign Montrezl Harrell. Not only does he provide a big boost to their bench, but he also fits their culture perfectly. Harrell has been a significant part of their core ever since the days before Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. He started to make a significant impact during his third year in the league, his first year as a member of the Clippers. Many tend to forget that he was a part of the trade that sent Chris Paul to the Houston Rockets, which has proven to be an integral part of that deal.

Candidate #2: Charlotte Hornets

This may seem like an odd destination on the surface. However, when one really analyzes it, Charlotte begins to make more sense. While they are rebuilding, they do have a solid piece to build around in Most Improved Player of the Year candidate, Devonte’ Graham, who could use a solid presence down low. It is intriguing to think of the potential alley-oops from Graham to Harrell. Plus, it would be a step in the right direction for a Hornets squad. Graham has averaged 7.5 assists this season without much of a supporting cast. Not to mention, Harrell would have a more significant role in Charlotte as he would possibly be the second option behind Graham.

Candidate #3: Detroit Pistons

Like Charlotte, Detroit would provide a location where Harrell would have a bigger role. If the team cuts ties with Blake Griffin and/or loses Christian Wood, Motrezl Harrell would not be a bad option to fill the void at the power forward slot. He would be going to a lottery team, but he could be the one X-factor that could make them at the very least, an eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons are a team in no man’s land right now; They are not good enough to make the postseason, but not bad enough to land a high draft pick. However, landing a free agent like Harrell would be a step in the right direction for the Detroit Pistons’ future.
