During the 2019-20 NBA season, New Orleans Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram emerged as one of the most dynamic players in the league. Before the season was canceled, Ingram averaged a career-high 24.3 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, and 4.3 assists per game. He also shot 85.3 percent from the free-throw line. After a frustrating stint with the Los Angeles Lakers, Ingram finally hit his stride. He was in the running for the Most Improved Player and became an all-star.

Recently, stories have circulated that Ingram wants a max contract in the off-season. According to CBS Sports, the Pelicans are willing to match any offer made to him. Ingram is set to be a restricted free agent. It seems both sides want to have a new deal in place. The only question is if Ingram is worth a max contract.

The Reasons for a Max Contract

As mentioned before, Ingram is posting career-high numbers in his first year in New Orleans. He is finally living up to his second overall draft pick status. He became one of the most important players on this young Pelicans team. Ingram has played and started in 56 out of 64 games this season, meaning he has become durable and reliable. Also, Ingram is just 22 years old and has plenty of upsides left.

The Reasons Against a Max Contract

Ingram is posting career-highs in most statistical categories. However, he might not be the Pelicans’ franchise player. That status could be designated to rookie phenom, Zion Williamson. Since Williamson’s debut, Ingram’s numbers have dropped a bit. During the month of March, he averaged 18.6 points per game and shot a mere 37.2 percent overall. Williamson has led the way, averaging 24.2 points per game in March. While Ingram is important, he might not be the number one option anymore.

What’s Next?

Ingram will command a lot of money in the off-season. The Pelicans are willing to match any offer, which speaks to how they feel about Ingram. He is held in high regard in New Orleans. However, the instant rise of Williamson does cloud Ingram’s value a bit with the Pelicans. Ingram has to adjust his game once again and excel from there. On the other hand, he can be the undisputed number one option on a number of teams. Other teams will max out for Ingram. If the Pelicans are that willing to keep him, then he is worth the maximum amount.
