NBA Rumor: Timberwolves Tried to Acquire D'Angelo Russell
D’Angelo Russell is one of the biggest names in the free agent market. He is one of the most sought-after stars and multiple teams are in pursuit of the 23-year old all-star guard. And that, being said, the Minnesota Timberwolves are one of the teams who are very interested in D’Angelo Russell. Before Russell was traded to the Golden State Warriors via Sign-and-trade, there are rumors that the Timberwolves approached the Brooklyn Nets about a potential sign and trade deal centered around Andrew Wiggins. Is it just another NBA rumor?

There are a lot of rumors involving D’Angelo Russell was acquired by the Warriors. And the Minnesota Timberwolves are one of the teams that tried to get him. The Timberwolves wanted some changes as they continually failed to achieve things despite the young talented roster they already have. They have one of the best big men in the league in Karl-Anthony Towns. But still not enough to even make it to the playoffs. Andrew Wiggins was the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. And it seems like he didn’t live up to the expectations. He didn’t turn out to be the star everybody was expecting him to become.
It looks like the Minnesota Timberwolves are already giving up on him. And they wanted to ship him now away. D’Angelo Russell and Karl-Anthony Towns have great connections outside the court. So, that connection could have helped them bring Russell to Minnesota. Russell finally came out of his shell and made his first all-star appearance where he averaged 21.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists with a Player Efficiency Rating of 19.48. And this is the best time to acquire the blossoming star.
The Duo of D’Angelo Russell and Karl-Anthony Towns surrounded by decent role players can make the Timberwolves a contender in the Western Conference. It will be a great scenario for the Timberwolves but the sad news is; the negotiation didn’t even start between the two franchises. Wolfson said that the discussion never got even an inch off the ground. It ended up like a crazy idea of the Timberwolves to get rid of Andrew Wiggins’ massive contract.
Maybe the Brooklyn Nets don’t actually believe in Andrew Wiggins’ potential. Maybe they don’t want to take the risk and absorb his massive contract when there are other better options in the free agent market. Unless Minnesota could offload Wiggins’ contract, there will be no hope for them to sign a top tier free agent this coming free agency.
